The Shawl

This story happened in Philadelphia towards the end of the nineteenth century.‏

One evening winter, Dr Mitchell sat down in an armchair and started reading a book, but after an exhausting day at the surgery, he soon fell asleep.‏

هذه القصة حدثت في فيلاديلفيا حوالي نهاية القرن التاسع عشر. ففي إحدى أمسيات الشتاء, جلس الدكتور ميتشل على كرسي مريح وبدأ يقرأ كتاباً, لكن بعد يوم منهك من العمل الجراحي, نام في الحال.‏

A short while later he woke up suddenly when he heard the door bell ringing. There was a girl standing on the door step. It was cold and snow was falling, but she was wearing only a thin shawl around her shoulders and she was shivering. (My mother is very ill), she said. (Please come).‏

وبعد برهة قصيرة, استيقظ فجأة عندما سمع جرس الباب يرن. كانت هناك فتاة واقفة على عتبة الباب. كان الطقس بارداً والثلج يسقط, لكنها كانت ترتدي فقط شالاً رقيقاً حول كتفيها وكانت ترتجف. قالت: (أمي مريضة جداً, تعال من فضلك).‏

Walking through the dark and snowy streets was not easy, but eventually they came to an old apartment building and the girl led the doctor up to a women on the third floor.‏

إن السير في الشوارع المظلمة والملأى بالثلج لم يكن سهلاً, لكن أخيراً وصلوا الى بناء شقة قديمة وقادت الفتاة الطبيب الى غرفة في الطابق الثالث.‏

There was a woman lying on the bed and the doctor recognized her as a former servant of his. After examining her, he took out his notepad and looked around for the girl. زWhere is your daughter? زhe asked the woman.س I need her to go for some medicine.‏

كانت هناك امرأة مستلقية على الفراش, وعرفها الطبيب كونها كانت خادمة سابقة عنده. وبعد فحصها أخرج ورقة وتطلع من حوله الى الفتاة. (أين ابنتك) سأل المرأة. (أحتاجها لتذهب وتجلب بعض الدواء.)‏

زMy daughter?س she said in surprise. زMy daughter died a month agoز? زBut thatشs impossible said the doctor.س She came to fetch me. I saw her. She was wearing a shawl.‏

(ابنتي?) قالت في دهشة. (ابنتي ماتت منذ شهر.) لكن الطبيب قال: (إن ذلك مستحيلا. لقد جاءت لتحضرني. شاهدتها, وكانت ترتدي شالاً.)‏

زMy daughterشs shoes and shawl are in there.س, said the woman pointing to a small cupboard. The doctor stopped writing out the prescription and went to the cupboard.‏

(حذاء ابنتي وشالها موجودان هناك.) قالت المرأة وهي تشير الى خزانة صغيرة. توقف الطبيب عن كتابة الوصفة الطبية وذهب الى الخزانة.‏

He saw the girlشs shawl lying on the shelf. It was folded and dry. It clearly had not been worn that night.‏

رأى شال الفتاة ملقياً على الرف. كان مطوياً وجافاً. وكان واضحاً أنه لم يُلبس في تلك الليلة.‏
