Time on your hands

If you have time on your hands, you have a lot of free time, usually more
than you need or want


Example:

Since he retired, Bill has too much time on his hands. He should take up
a hobby!

If you add fuel to the flames, you say something that makes a
difficult situation worse

E.g


He forgot their wedding anniversary, and his apologies only added
fuel to the flames

A foot in the door

If you say that someone has a foot in the door, you mean that they
have a small but successful start in something and will possibly do well
in the future.

E.g

With today's unemployment, it's difficult to get a foot in the door in any
profession
